Most women lust after thick and luscious hair for many reasons. As well as being easier to style and manipulate, it looks so full and sultry. Whether you have fine hair, thinning hair, or are simply looking for extra volume, making your hair appear thicker is a straightforward process.

Have a Regular Cut

"Unfortunately, genetics play a massive part in having fine or thick hair. I always say to my clients that the secret to maintaining healthy hair is getting it trimmed on a regular basis," says Rebecca Shann, hair stylist and owner of Hair and Beauty By Becky. "This enables healthy hair growth and stops it from developing split ends."

Split ends can be detrimental to how fast and how much that your hair grows. Try to visit a stylist every eight to twelve weeks and ask them to cut off the minimum necessary amount to eliminate split ends.

Use a Thickening Conditioner

You can also use a thickening conditioner on your hair after shampooing for enhanced body.

"There are plenty of thickening conditioners on the market, so make sure that you do your research beforehand," says Shann. "I personally like more natural ones with vitamins such as B5, C and E to promote hair thickness and growth."

Applying coconut oil as part of a conditioning treatment can also be great for restoring and nourishing dry, damaged, or lackluster hair to make it appear thicker and more ravishing.

Backcomb Away

A quick and effortless way to create fullness in your mane is to indulge in a bit of backcombing when styling.

  1. Hold a small section of dry hair upright and position a teasing comb a few inches away from your roots.
  2. Use the teasing comb to gently backcomb your hair towards your roots.
  3. Apply hairspray to set the hair in place.
  4. Use the end of your comb or smoothing cream over the top layer of your hair to conceal the teasing underneath.
  5. Repeat the process with other sections of hair until you've achieved your desired height and shape.

Blow Dry in A Certain Way

Blow drying wet hair in the following ways is a simple way to develop fullness.

  1. Use your fingers as a comb when blow drying to eliminate the polished, brushed down look.
  2. Hold a section of hair upright and position your hairdryer's nozzle towards the roots to help you lift them.
  3. Pull your hair away from your scalp with your fingers as you blow dry to heat and build volume at the roots.
  4. Blow dry your hair upside down for an instant lift.
  5. To eliminate frizz, apply a smoothing cream on your tresses once they're fully dry.

Try Heated Rollers

"Investing in a good set of heated rollers is always worth doing to create volume. It does take practice, but as long as the rollers are sat at the root of the hair and secured properly then the lift will happen," says Shann. Try the following steps:

  1. Start with dry hair, since wet tresses won't hold the volume as well, and work through a heat protectant spray.
  2. Grab a small section of hair and position the roller in the middle of the section. Wrap the ends around the roller before winding the rest of the hair around the roller and up towards the scalp. Clip the roller in place.
  3. Once the rollers have been in position for an hour and have cooled down, remove each one gently.
  4. Add a small amount of thickening fibres or powder at the root of each top section and backcomb towards the roots for further height.
  5. Finish off this look with some hairspray.

Use Volumizing Styling Products

Additionally, there are a few volumizing products that you can experiment with as you're styling your tresses to boost bounce. These are:

  • Thickening fibers or powder - Apply to dry roots and backcomb small sections towards the roots to see instant results.
  • Volumizing mousse - Work an egg-size dollop evenly through damp hair from your roots to your ends before blow drying.
  • Dry volume spray - If you don't have time to blow out your hair, let it air dry and then spray your hair all over with a dry volume spray for a big, sexy aesthetic.
  • Hairspray with extra body - Hold a small section of hair upright and spray volumizing hairspray at the roots. Proceed to backcomb each section towards the roots and finish with a further spritz of hairspray for a long-lasting effect.

Protect Your Hair

Finally, the ultimate way to make hair look thicker is if it is naturally thicker. You can sustain your hair volume by preserving it in the following ways:

  • "Always use a heat protection spray when using heated appliances as fine hair is extremely fragile so it needs that added protection," says Shann.
  • If your hair is chemically treated, colored, permed, or straightened on a regular basis, use a deep conditioning hair mask at least once a month to promote healthy hair growth.

  • Your hair is less likely to dry out and split if it's well hydrated, so apply an argan oil product on wet hair post-shower for moisturizing purposes.
